Sunburn, Insect Bites and Stings Treatment – Enjoy you Summer!

Q.  I know preventing sunburn is preferable, but I am wondering if you can recommend treatment for sunburn with natural ingredients?

A. We can recommend the following for sunburn and also have a few suggestions for treatment of insect bites and stings.

Aloe Vera gel is cooling and soothing for sunburn and helps healing. Tannic acid powder dissolved in cool bath water soothes sunburn.

Insect repellants
Orange peel may be rubbed across exposed skin to serve as an insect repellant; lavender and cedar oil are also effective in repelling insects.

Insect bites and sunburn
Aloe Vera is beneficial in treating bites and burns. You can use the gel of an Aloe Vera plant from your home or purchase a gel product (100% organic gel is recommended) from a health food store or pharmacy. Chilled witch hazel, white or apple cider (organic with the mother in it is recommended) may be used to decrease the itching of bites.

Insect bites and stings
Activated charcoal is an effective treatment for spider or other bites and stings. First, remove any stingers. Use clean water to make a paste of the charcoal and apply it to the affected area. A piece of plastic wrap covered with a bandage will keep the charcoal paste in place. (This is also an excellent remedy for boils or pimples.) A paste of baking soda and cool water is an excellent antidote for stings.

Note: If an insect bite or sting creates an allergic reaction resulting in abnormal swelling, welts, difficulty in breathing or signs of shock, obtain emergency medical assistance.

Lifestyle and Diet Contribute to Constipation

Q. Why do people become constipated? What is considered normal for the number of bowel movements per day?

A. There is no ‘normal’ number of bowel movements that applies to everyone. Some of the main reasons for widespread problems with constipation among people all over the world, especially in Western civilizations are:

  1. Poor food combinations of our modern diets (‘fast food’ high in carbs, sugar, fat, and salt) and the ready availability of these foods all over the world.
  2. A sedentary lifestyle – many people sit in front of a computer, at a desk or in front of a TV for many hours per day.  Previously, people did a lot of physical labor. Physical exertion even if only walking to work, up and down stairs, etc is very important to keep the systems flowing properly.
  3. Limited intake of water due to the sedentary lifestyle. The lack of activity causes less perspiration, with less need for water to replace lost fluids.

Handy Health Hints:

Sprained ankles and other joints can swell rapidly and may also discolor

~ Arnica 30C helps with shock.
~ Soak the affected area in an Epsom salt solution for 15 minutes, then pat dry.
~ Elevate the area if possible.
~ Place washcloths soaked in ice cold apple cider vinegar on the area for 20 minutes. Dry and gently rub in arnica cream, gel or ointment.

Xylitol as a Sweetener

Handy Health Hint:

Regarding the us of Xylitol as a sweetener: ”After writing the program for How to Facilitate the Healing of Chronic and Systemic Disease, I have subsequently found that Xylitol may be carcinogenic and I recommend only the use of Stevia as a sweetener (without alcohol, organic if possible).  Stevia is a super-food and has many health benefits beyond its use as a sweetener.”


Rebuilding Bone

Handy Health Hint/Health Question

Q. Per your recommendation, I went to a Nucca Chiropractor (McTimony in Europe and England) to have my atlas joint adjusted. That has helped a lot with the gnashing of my teeth (bruxism – grinding and clenching teeth) at night but the doctor says the bone has atrophied from years of subluxation (misalignment). How can the bone be rebuilt?

A. 1. Correcting postures that cause the weight of your head to put undue stress on those joints. For instance, raise your desk so that your head does not look down at your paperwork as much as possible.
2. Gentle exercises, to keep the muscles flexible but strong, recommended by your chiropractor would be helpful.
3. An extremely helpful product is available called Reliv Classic Formula. It is available through our Spiritual Journeys office (1-877-552-5646).

Serotonin – The Feel Good Hormone

Serotonin is a hormone that functions as a neuro-transmitter. Much of the newest serotonin research focuses on the molecule’s activity not as a neurotransmitter, a conveyor of information, but as a hormone, a shaper of tissues. It regulates the growth and maintenance of the skeletal system throughout life (breaking down old bone and building new bone), and is thought to regulate learning, memory, mood and sleep.

Some cases of depression are influenced by reduced quantities or activity of serotonin in the brain and we tend to have seasonal variation in levels, with lower levels in the winter months. Adequate sleep, physical exercise and activity increase serotonin levels.

Most all protein foods contain tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, including walnuts, chicken, turkey, eggs, salmon, spirulina and soybeans. Folic acid is needed for the absorption of tryptophan – you can literally eat your way to happiness with food rich in tryptophan and folic acid, the building blocks to maintaining high levels of serotonin. Remember to eat your leafy greens, beans, and whole grains – good sources of folic acid.

Oxytocin, known as the ‘love hormone’ due to its part in bonding, mating and the birth process, is increased when we experience love, trust and comfort – thus spending time in enjoyable social interaction with friends, family and our romantic partner (including sexual activity and orgasm) are other ways to increase our serotonin levels and our sense of well being and mood.
